Jack was the most popular name given to baby boys in England and Wales in 2006. Jack continues to be number one and has been the top boys name for 12 years. Thomas jumped one place to number two in the boys top five, replacing Joshua which fell one to number three. Oliver climbed one place to number four and Harry rose four places to number five. The boys top 50 baby names is much the same as usual, but Harrison jumped six places to number 36. Alfie, Cameron and Henry all rose five places to numbers 16, 30 and 39 respectively. Noah, Oscar, Lucas and Rhys enter the top 50 for the first time; while Louis, Brandon, Toby, Kieran and Charles dropped out.

The name Mohammed is 22nd in the list of most popular boys names, moving up a place from last year. Spelled Muhammad, it is the 44th most popular name and Mohammad is at 69. The Office for National Statistics said there were 2,833 baby boys called Mohammed and 1,422 called Muhammad, its most common alternative spelling. Mohammed and Muhammad, are now more popular babies names in England and Wales than George or Joseph. The total exceeds the number of Georges (3,386) or Josephs (3,755) reflecting the diverse ethnic mix of the population.
